ABORIGINAL WOMAN OF DISTINCTION AWARD - PHYLLIS CHELSEA - WILLIAMS LAKE

THE NORTHERN BC TODAY'S WOMAN AWARDS is proud to recognize PHYLLIS CHELSEA - WILLIAMS LAKE

Presenting the ABORIGINAL WOMAN OF DISTINCTION AWARD on behalf of the ABORIGINAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTRE is RAY GEROW, PRESIDENT, CEO.

Phyllis is from Alkali Lake British Columbia and a member Esketeme First Nation. From an early age, Phyllis has shown remarkable courage and dedication in the pursuit of better life for herself, her family and her community. Recognizing the devastating toll that the consumption of alcohol was having on her own family relationships, Phyllis chose to change - becoming an abstainer. Through her efforts and example, members of her family and entire Community, eventually achieved sobriety. It was not an easy task. She was met with hostility and opposition but she preserved and prevailed. Phyllis's pursuit of a better life did not stop there. She fostered abused and underprivileged children. Her home became a haven for dozens of children seeking respite from dangerous home environments. She instituted local services to replace those provided by agencies unfamiliar with local traditions. She had the previously forbidden Shuswap language revived and recognized as a credit for university entrance at UBC. She was also the force behind the development of an elementary school on the Alkali Lake Reserve. Because of her efforts, alkali is now a model for other Native communities across Canada. Phyllis received an Honorary Doctor of Law from UBC in 1990.

At the present time a student is able take an ABT online program from any college in the province and be given credit at all other colleges. Gloria say's "I would like to be able to take credit for this remarkable feat but I can't. We were able to achieve this feat only because the men and women that I work with provincially are the most dedicated, selfless people I have ever had the privilege of working with. It took all of us to make this happen." Gloria served as President of the Business Educators Coordinators Committee (BECC) for 4 years. It was during this time that the online initiative was started. At the present time she is a NLC's Senior Instructor - which means she oversee all four NLC campuses that offer ABT.
